The Grey Ones

Up next is a WOAH power collab with INSTALL:WeHo and Phyllis Navidad in conjunction with MKL Gallery and FruitFlyLife as we proudly present The Grey Ones, a live performance by the illusory trio WIFE next ThursdayAugust 22nd at LA’s Downtown Independent at 9PM.

///

She will only be seen in the dark.
She is a magician of picture and light.
She exists in many dimensions.
She is a visceral contemporary dance.
She is studying the subtelties of your behavior.
She is eternally bound to archetype, myth, lore, alchemy, and dreams.
She is metamorphosis.
She is the daughter of Jim Henson, Chris Cunningham, Akira Kurosawa, Kathy Rose, Wendy Carlos, Yayoi Kusama, Planningtorock, Aleister Crowley, her friends, and you.

\\\

WIFE is an all sensory theatrical experience born of three LA-based artists: Jasmine Albuquerque, Kristen Leahy, and Nina McNeely.  Combining surrealist animations with original choreography, costumes, sounds, and visuals WIFE utilizes movement and dance as a vehicle for storytelling.  A magician of picture and light, WIFE employs old and new technologies to illuminate mystical phenomena and ancient archetypes that resonate with a collective unconscious.

Premiering at the Long Beach TEDxSoCal event in 2011, and later airing as a recorded feature on The Creator’s ProjectWIFE‘s performance The Grey Ones, juxtaposes live projection mapping with ephemeral, fluid movements and statuesque, saintly silhouettes to create a narrative on the evolution of time. Performed to an original score composed by electronic music artist Amon Tobin, The Grey Ones sets a scene evoking myth, organic matter, decay, and transcendence.

A recipient of the ARC grant from the Center of Cultural Innovation, WIFE‘s innovative works have been showcased at The Getty‘s Pacific Standard Time, Bootleg Dance Festival, Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum, Honor Fraser Gallery, Human Resources, Pieter Performance Space, and Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions (LACE), among other prestigious contemporary platforms.

Arrive early as we kick-off the reception at 7PM with a pop-up boutique from innovative retail platform VCR (Vintage/Contemporary/Reconstructed) attuned to live sets from DJ’s Heidi and Jeniluv as Ralph Machio.

Reception 7PM // Performance 9PM
